Down Syndrome is love, strength, bravery, advocacy, and positivity all wrapped up in a beautiful individual.
When I gave birth to my oldest daughter at the tender age of 20, I didn’t have a clue what Down Syndrome was. When I heard the word I automatically thought of institutions and death, because I wasn’t educated on the subject. I had only met a handful of people with DS in passing, and I never really thought of their benefit to our community.
After I had my daughter and received the diagnosis of DS, I opened up Doctor Google and began educating myself. I learned so much in that first week of Cori’s life. I started to see the potential she possessed to do amazing things. I began to learn that DS wasn’t a death sentence or a burden. My heart began to grow with each story I read of amazing individuals with DS making a real, positive difference in our world. The adorable baby in my arms was more inspiration than I can express.
4 years into our adventures and I have a new definition for DS. Cori is an endless well of positivity and hope. She possesses more compassion in her heart than anyone I’ve ever met. She has so much courage and strength to accomplish her goals, it truly astounds me. Down Syndrome is love, strength, bravery, advocacy, and positivity all wrapped up in a beautiful individual. Our world would not be right without Down Syndrome, it has become such a staple in our daily lives to try harder, to do better. Down Syndrome is a diagnosis that gives a family the ability to see the world in a new light, it helps us to view things at a slower pace so we truly appreciate them. Down Syndrome is the promise for endless possibilities.
